New Zealand eInvoicing registrations exceed 50,000

More than 50,000 businesses are choosing eInvoicing – the direct digital exchange of invoice information between a supplier’s and buyer’s systems. This major milestone marks a 400% growth in the last year.

Alongside this, the volume of eInvoices being sent and received by businesses has also surged in the last year, with more than 160,000 being exchanged to date.

Are you ready to join these businesses and experience the benefits of eInvoicing?

On 27 February, Minister for Small Business and Manufacturing, Hon Chris Penk, announced the recent eInvoicing growth and the Government’s continued support.

“eInvoicing is a game changer for small businesses. With limited cash reserves, a late or unpaid invoice can quickly throw businesses off track and create a domino effect of challenges.

“Moving away from slow and administratively intensive paper and PDF invoices could bring $400 million in annual productivity gains across New Zealand and make a real difference to providing stability for small businesses.

“The Government is supporting this momentum by updating our own systems.

Last year we committed to ensuring all government agencies that process more than 2,000 domestic invoices a year will have eInvoicing systems in place by the end of this year.

“Smarter ways of working are key to our plan to lift New Zealand’s economic productivity and improve public sector efficiency.

MBIE’s eInvoicing Executive Sponsor and Chief Operating Officer, Michael Alp, says this accelerated growth is being driven by increased support from large businesses, Government and software providers.

“The latest data demonstrates a clear shift and preference for eInvoicing as it starts to gather momentum. Large businesses in the telecommunications, retail, hardware and ICT sectors, and more, prefer their customers to receive eInvoices from them.”

The Government also announced a procurement rule change in late 2024, that requires more government agencies to pay 95% of domestic trade eInvoices within 5 business days by January 2026.

Government introduces stronger requirements for eInvoicing in New Zealand

“We know that eInvoicing can help small businesses get paid faster. The government is committed to enabling faster payment with these new rules. They provide an extra cashflow incentive and a strong message of confidence for businesses to adopt eInvoicing.”

“Businesses that trade with government can expect eInvoicing to become the norm. Likewise, as more large organisations and businesses adopt and prefer eInvoicing, we can expect to see the exchange of eInvoices between trading partners continue to grow.”
